If you’ve ever seen the Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, you’ll know how spectacular they are even if it’s only a short display.
Here’ in Oban we can see them clearly on good weather nights under the right conditions. This year some fortunate star gazers near Oban were able to catch a glimpse of Steve (Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement) which is a rare form of the Lights. What makes Steve special is that rather than shimmering curtains of light, the effect is more like a thin arc of purple light aligned east-west stretching up into space.
We don’t know of anyone who captured photos of this rare astronomical treat but the accompanying photo gives a good idea of what Oban sees of the Aurora on a good night.
