The Argyllshire Gathering and The Oban Games
The
Argyllshire Gathering and The Oban Games brings together athletes, dancers and musicians not just from all over the Highlands but throughout the world. So prominent are these Games that many of the events are for Scottish or World Championships. All the traditional Scottish events are showcased: the caber toss, putting the stone, Scottish hammer throw, weight for height, weight for distance, and hill race. In addition, some of the world’s best pipers and Highland dancers will also be on display, helping to provide a truly traditional Scottish atmosphere.
The 2011 Gathering and Games is set for August 25 and the Games commence at 10am with the traditional Steward’s March from Argyll Square in the town centre to Mossfield Park.
Local Producers Market
Running from March to December, the Local Producers Market at Kintaline Farm, Benderloch provides a great opportunity to sample and buy excellent Scottish produce and crafts. On sale are the finest meats, seafood, home baking, confectionery, fruit and veg, and delicious free range eggs laid on the farm. There is also Scottish-themed jewellery, knitwear, needlework, pottery and art available. The farm is an important centre for poultry breeding with all the birds visible to visitors in the fields and around the old watermill's
The market is held from 10am to 3pm on the first and third Thursday of each month.
Scottish Islands Peaks Race
The
Scottish Islands Peak Race is adventure race is for teams of sailors and fell runners and is held annually on and around some of the most beautiful parts of the west coast of Scotland. The race starts Friday May 13th near the Manor House in Oban with a short hill run then competitors sail for Salen on Mull, run over Ben More, sail to Craighouse on Jura, run the Paps, sail to Aran, run Goat Fell, then sail to a finish at Troon. The race takes 2 to 3 days and is open to multi-hull racing and cruising boats.
Oban Sea Kayak Race
The
Oban Sea Kayak Race is a new, fun charity event for serious and casual kayakers alike taking place for the second time on Saturday 3rd September. The route is around the Island of Kerrera which affords superb views of the surrounding islands and open waters as well as the chance to spot seals, dolphins and porpoises. Also planned are less strenuous, fun water activities for families.
Dalmally Show
The Dalmally Agricultural Show showcases some of Scotland’s finest livestock as well as traditional home baking, Scottish handicrafts, horticulture, and shinty all set amidst magnificent mountain scenery. This popular annual event is regarded as one of the best Agricultural Shows in Scotland and is always well attended by competitors and visitors alike. In addition to the livestock, Industrial and Home Industries competitions there are a number of demonstrations by local charities and craftspeople showing their skills and techniques. Adding to the excitement are pipe bands and shinty matches which always proves popular with spectators.
The show takes place on Saturday 3rd September at Mart Park, Dalmally.
