Gylen Castle is situated on the southern part Kerrera, the island just off Oban in the Firth of Lorne, and it’s well worth a visit if you’re staying in the Oban area.
It’s an imposing castle and if you position yourself in the right spot you can see it perched dramatically on the skyline commanding spectacular views to the mainland and across the Firth of Lorne to the Inner Hebrides.
Gylen Castle, also known as the ‘Castle of Fountains’, was built in the 1580s as a stronghold of Clan MacDougall and a strategic centre of control and observation on the approach to Oban.
Sieges, fires and weathering caused damage to the castle during the centuries but it was restored by Historic Scotland in 2006 and is now open to the public all year round. As an added bonus to visitors there is no entrance fee. Visitors can also enjoy tea, coffee, refreshments and home cooking at the award winning Tea Garden which is close to the castle. The Tea Garden is open 7 days a week between Easter and October.
You can get to Kerrera via the Kererra Ferry which leaves from a slipway two miles south of Oban along the coast road. There is car parking right at the slipway.
Once on the island, you can either walk to Gylen Castle or cycle. The southern circular route is the most popular and easiest route and at 5 miles can be walked in around 3 hours. Bikes can be hired from the Oban Cycle Shop.
